CBD is is a hot topic recently – but do you know what CBD is, what effects it has on the body, or what its health benefits are?
Read on to learn more.
What exactly is CBD?
Cannabis plants contain over 100 chemical compounds that are known as cannabinoids. Each of these compounds has a way of interacting with the body – and in particular the endocannabinoid system – that causes a wide range of effects. CBD is one of the active compounds found in cannabis plants, and it’s present in large amounts in hemp plants. CBD on its own has no psychoactive effects, but based on current research, it has quite a number of health benefits.
Is there a difference between CBD and THC?
The main difference is CBD won’t get you high. One of the active ingredients in cannabis is tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, and it is known as a psychoactive; but CBD is an entirely different compound. So if you don’t want any THC in your CBD product then you can get the full benefits without it going to your head. CBD products are essentially herbal extracts that have cannabidiol as the main ingredient, and they have a variety of uses but the main one is to treat ailments.
What are the benefits of using CBD?
Cannabidiol products such as oils, tablets, gummies, or powders are used to treat a wide range of ailments and there is a lot of anecdotal evidence pointing to CBD as a legitimate treatment for things like chronic pain, headaches, and insomnia. A growing number of skin care experts are also using CBD to fight wrinkles and other signs of aging.
Although one could argue we’re in the early stages as far as understanding the full effects of cannabidiol, virtually all the studies done until now (some of which was funded by the U.S. government) show that CBD can be used by patients to treat anxiety issues, drug addiction, food cravings, cancer, and chronic pain.
Patients with epilepsy have experienced tremendous change when put on CBD. Doctors at the NYU Comprehensive Epilepsy Center have noted significant improvement on epilepsy patients who took CBD regularly. The FDA has already approved a drug called Epidolex to treat seizures; and the drug, which contains pure CBD oil, does not cause unpleasant side effects as is common with other epilepsy medication.
Is it illegal to use CBD products?
As of now the DEA still classifies all marijuana products (including CBD) as restricted substances but since the FDA already approved a CBD product as a valid medicine, it led to a withdrawal process for the DEA to update their stance on cannabis. As a response, the DEA now classifies Epidiolex as the least restricted drug (Schedule 5 substances); but there is some indication they might in the near future reschedule CBD entirely.
As far as using CBD products, it really depends on your state law and also where the CBD came from: hemp or marijuana. If the plant where your CBD came from is legal in your state then it’s not a problem to use any of these products.
